Stroke is currently the leading cause of disability and the 4th leading cause of death in the United States. Health care expenditures on stroke related care exceeds $40 billion annually in the United States. The incidence of acute stroke has recently been estimated at over 800,000 strokes per year, of which approximately 195,000 are recurrent. Additionally, there are over 500,000 TIAs, which are commonly referred to as “mini strokes” and often precede strokes in many cases.
